Enabling Good Lives (EGL) is a kaupapa initiated by Hon Tariana Turia in 2011 and developed by members of the disability community with the intent of increasing choice and control for disabled people and their families. Tiaho Trust are working across Te Tai Tokerau supporting community-led development that supports the EGL social model that rather than someone being ‘disabled’, it is society that is disabling to people with different abilities.

This workshop is for tangata whaikaha/people with ‘disabilities’, or their family.

members who want to lead change to happen and would like to learn strategies and examples that have worked to instigate change. The presenter, Sue Bradford, is an activist and former MP who has played an instrumental role in bringing awareness and subsequent change via social and political forums.

Sue grew up in a politically engaged family that deeply influenced her activism for causes such as anti-Vietnam War protests, anti-apartheid campaigns, and the feminist movement.

Sue also championed issues such as workers' rights, housing, and the environment. She was instrumental in advocating for the introduction of the minimum wage for youth and improved conditions for beneficiaries. Her dedication to these causes earned her respect across the political spectrum, even from those who disagreed with her views. Sue continues to advocate for systemic change to address social inequalities.
